The Oasis LIPU Carloforte is located in the Island of San Pietro, located about 6 kilometers from the southwest coast of Sardinia.
The island is of volcanic origin and is famous from a geological point of view because the rocks known as commenditi named from a particular area of the island where they were studied and classified for the first time.
The oasis covers an area of 236 hectares in the western part of the island with 6.6 Km of coastline. The reef looks like a rugged rocky platform overlooking the sea, up to 130 meters high, carved by deep bays (Cala Vinagra and Cala Fico) and intersected by canals that flow into the sea. The rocks, eroded by wind and other atmospheric agents, are characterized by small cavities, recesses and crevices that give the landscape a wild look and charming. The continuous geological and climatic changes of the island has favored the creation of a totally unique environment, characterized by a variety of flora and fauna including many species that are found only on this island, and that led to the classification of the area as "Area of international interest".
Behind the cliff, vegetation is represented by scrubland, characterized by low shrubs, scattered and resistant to wind and marine aerosols, characteristic of the Mediterranean maquis. There are species adapted to extreme environmental conditions, including the marine fennel and two major Sardinian-courses endemics such as the greek Limonio and Seseli Bocconi Father whose intense aroma permeates the reef environment.
Moving from the coast to inland areas you can see the most typical of the Mediterranean species: myrtle, rosemary, the Fillirea, Mastic and brooms that form low and extended coverages. A vibrant touch of color is given by the flowering of two small endemic plants: the Anagallis monelli from vibrant red corolla and Bellium crassifolium, an elegant white daisy. In most inland areas and sheltered from the strong mistral wind, one can observe residual pine forests of pine of Aleppo, that in this island is the most advanced stage of the Mediterranean vegetation.
